Julia d'Albert Pusey is the Co-Founder and a super smart business woman. 

This episode is packed with about as much as can be packed into 40+ minutes. I think Julia is probably one of THE most prepared guests I've ever had on the show.

Julia says: "Don’t be scared of failing – just don’t put a lot of money behind it" and explains how this applied in her previous business. "Set a financial limit"

She also says: "You cannot go to the market with perfect option. Test the market on the cheapest option and see if there is a bite"

She describes the early days in "Myrtle and Maude" when it was "not pretty" because getting something out there was most important.

She describes the impact of Google shopping and then Amazon on their business.

Ian describes himself as "Failed vet student, amusement ride operator, audiovisual technician"

He started his own advertising agency so he could give himself the creative director job he yearned for.  That business won some awards which helped him start audiovisual business Scene Change - partly to test marketing ideas that his corporate clients felt were too weird. It worked, becoming a successful national firm in the event industry.

Ian believes: "So many talented people want to give it a shot, yet they’re held back by the big business myths. But success is simpler than your crusty CEO wants you to think."

Ian built his businesses on simple rules, Year 6 maths, basic decency and no jargon.

The book is terrific and is certainly written in Ian's very Australian writing style.

Nicki Krawczyk is determined to destroy the myth that writers don’t make any money. After earning her degree in Public Relations and reading a book her mother gave her about how to become a copywriter and earn 6-figures, Nicki propelled herself into freelance work.

There are a few things that are truly exceptional about Jack Tanasi and here are just a few that stand out from this conversation/ interview:

* he started his e-Commerce store completely from scratch. He did not have a product, didn't have a store. He created something from nothing

* during the early days of the enforced Melbourne lockdown – one of the longest lockdowns – Jack spent his time interviewing entrepreneurs who had started e-commerce brands “instead of playing Play Station like most people.”  He asked questions and "was a total sponge soaking up all their information."

* He tells of how he learned the most from the smallest of the 10 business owners he spoke with and it was a lot of the little things – that some of the bigger brands didn’t have issues with. This matters to a startup business.

This is so insightful – we look at the large companies for ideas and inspiration – and in fact small business is where many of our best lessons are. 

* He talks about taking that 1 product and creating 7 different SKUs – so smart! 

* Finding a name that he could have both here in Australia and across the globe – and that has not all been smooth sailing – there were some big challenges and fortunately that has all been sorted out. He tells us about it in this episode.

* He has a 3 days action plan and holds himself accountable to implement an idea within 3 days.

* Jack is big on Time Management and has fixed ways he organises his day and that how he gets so much done in a day, in a week, in a month.

* Feedback comes from customers and they pride themselves on a fast response. They fix problems quickly.

* He says: "Be a sponge, learn as much as you can – constantly"

I've never really been a "goal setter" and have to admit the whole Great Big Hairy Goal discussion makes me squeamish! In this "just me" podcast episode I describe my personal approach to business today.

Inspired by a few different things that I've been thinking about and working on in the past few months, I'm taking a very singular view and focussing on The One Thing that I can do right now to achieve my daily, weekly and monthly goal.

Please notice that I use the singular goal - not the plural goals! Having too many goals, I have found, leads to nothing being done particularly well. 

Please also notice that in this episode I tend to use "can do" rather than "must do" or "need to do" (well, most of the time) do let me know if you hear a "need to" sneak in!  Language is one of my other projects i.e. as regards the language I use - all aligned to my One Goal.

Gabriella Rosa graduated as a Naturopath with a Bachelor of Health Science almost 20 years ago and has been running her business pretty much since graduating.

It's not all academic, Gabriela has a world wide impact:

In the past 10 years she has run free online events that have helped educate more than 140 000 people across more than 100 countries. One of here events was for more than 12 000 people in a 12 day free online event – this cost $80 000 to put this event together and run online.

The reason that Gabriela is able to run her free events for so many people is because her business is financially successful.

If you have been listening to previous conversations you know that one of my favourite questions is “when did you feel your business was real?” and Gabrialla’s answer is completely different to any other we have heard – she said “Last week” and laughs.

She goes on to explain what she means “As your business progresses you face different challenges”

"In that moment the business is real and then it becomes unreal again."

Gabriela is really honest about how she made the huge change from the entire business being in a physical location as well as relying on her individual effort – hours for dollars - and building something that was one to many. The changes happened in 2013 – she closed her physical practice and "took everything online."

She speaks really honestly about the thinking process about choosing a niche and tells a truly helpful example of how she has landed where she is today in her business - the pathway to finding the people she works with and solves their number 1 issue

I am personally inspired by what she says about her focus on THE MOST challenging cases that led her to where she is today. 

Gabriella asks a really powerful question: what is the highest price that you can comfortable ask for?

This underpins her premise that Pricing is a self image question.

Today I want to take us through the basic belief cycle – you may have seen this before or have had it explained to you before … and I especially want to use some of our beliefs about our ability to understand money as an example

The basic belief cycle = we start with our beliefs and our thoughts - our thoughts and our beliefs lead to our feelings - our feelings lead to the actions we take - and then our actions determine the results we achieve - our results then impact our beliefs and out thoughts and so we go around and around

In today's episode I use our beliefs about money and understanding how money works in our business and I follow the cycle through what happens to many of my clients.

What happens when another business like yours opens up nearby?

Whether a new business opens up physically near you or in the online world - no matter what industry you are in, there will always be others doing what you do and offering what you offer.

How do you think about it?

Do you view them as a direct competitor?

Do you view them as indirect competition? and view it as being helpful and healthy for your whole industry?

Fear holds many people back from truly making their impact in the world, from being more true to who they want to be, who they are meant to be.

Maybe this is you?

I usually consider myself to be brave, to be courageous and yet at times I find myself - apprehensive - that's my word for fear!

We've learned to name it other things.

In this episode I talk about a technique that I have found incredibly helpful. It's making friends with fear and understanding what my fear is protecting me from.

You may have heard of neuroscience which has given us incredible understanding of how our brains work.

Leah Weinberg helps couples plan their wedding - she is a wedding planner.

For 10 years Leah was a lawyer and she has left that behind her to build her own business. 

This is quite a story. She talks about money and pricing and the tough times when it feels so personal and what you can do to move on ... She says that rejection feels especially personal when you start out in a business that's provides a service.  Rejection is part of being in business.  She assures us that "your skin will toughen and it will hurt less …” and that's what I have found as well.

She believes there is somebody for everybody AND there really is enough business to go around.

And this is how she counteracts the “non-wins” and how she uses this belief to help not take things so personally …
